Who is Alo Olatokunboh Akin?

He is:

A Graduate of Computer Science from Federal Polytechnic Offa, Nigeria
He did his National Youth Service in a remote village in Ebonyi State,
He recently concluded a Certification course in Sun Java Web Component Development at the prestigious NIIT, Ikeja.
He served as an Invigilator at the Yearly NIIT Scholarship at TBS in Lagos.
He is currently the Systems Administrator at Clear Solutions Consulting, a Consulting firm based in Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos.
He also did a course in Strategic Management, which makes him a computer scientist with management abilities. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Strategic Management Nigeria.

This is a project being organised to reach out to young minds in Senior Secondary Schools in the country where I am residing.
It is to teach them about developing Positive Attitude and Self-Motivation for personal empowerment and being able to fulfill their goals on earth.

(1) TRAINING NIGERIAN YOUTH ON THE DEADLY EFFECTS OF HIV/AIDS THROUGH SEMINARS

Report and Importance of YEP!

REPORT OF THE INAUGURAL LECTURE OF THE YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM
The program scheduled for the 12th of July, 2008 came up as scheduled, though it was planned to empower senior secondary school students, but due to the teachers’ strike going on in Nigeria, the students could not make it, but Thank God who made the day to come to pass, by bringing the serving Youth Corp Members in the Local Government to the occasion.
The program started at a few minutes after twelve in the afternoon, the Chairman of the occasion, in person of Chief Oliver Eze N.U, the DPM of IZZI Local Government, was available to chair it and to contribute his own quota to the empowerment of the youth who were present.
The seminar started on a powerful note with the Opening Charge by Dr. Wande Ogunsanya, Zonal Coordinator, NCCF IZZI, where he defined Empowerment and what it takes to get empowered. A particular mention was made of refining ones talent to skills, which can only take place through the right attitude and empowerment.
After the opening charge, the Chairman gave his welcome address, emphasizing the importance of using our youthfulness usefully, he also talked about empowerment, using himself as an example, he read Political Science/Education but he also taught himself how to carve, which he was able to use to take the step of going to school for more education.
Then, the main speaker, Alo Olatokunboh Akin came on stage to present the first paper (unfortunately, he could not present the second one, because of time factor). In his paper titled: Self-Empowerment through Attitude, he defined Attitude, talked about Factors affecting Attitude, Developing a Positive Attitude, Benefits of Positive Attitude and Consequences of Negative Attitude, he also gave some powerful Words of Knowledge such as: “If you have a negative attitude, your eyes will not be opened to see opportunities”, “The Attitude of a champion is always Positive – have this attitude in you”, he also gave a new definition of knowledge thus: Know – l – Edge, which means: “What you Know gives you an Edge above the rest”.
There were jokes, testimonies (particular, to confirm that with negative attitude about a place, situation or person you can not see opportunities) and recitation.
After the lecture, the chairman gave a summary and the essence of the lecture to the audience, after which we went into the questions and answer session.
Two important questions were asked, viz: someone asked that: How can talent be refined into skill? – The answer given was that: Identify the talent with the highest priority i.e. what take your interest the most, get more information and training on it and develop yourself by practicing.
The other question was that: How can one finance his/her talent? – The answer given was that: Generate an Idea, write it down (it may be in form of proposal), you can then begin to sell your idea to people or make use of the little you have to start and it will then attract people who will be interested in sponsoring it.
Then came the time for donations, the chairman opened the session by donating some money, the corps liaison officer also gave his own donation and encouraged everybody present to do the same, he also gave the closing remark/vote of thanks, the program came to a close with the closing prayer said by one of the participants.
The refreshment was taken twice, after the session break and at the end of the program.
At the end, we were able to see that those that came did not go back the same and we give all glory, honour and adoration to the Almighty God, who also gave a perfect weather condition to suit the occasion

Lecture 2: What You have is What You Need
About 3500 years ago, in a far away land, a man was asked a simple question by his master that “What do you have in your hand?” he answered and said “a rod, Sir!”, he was then told that all he needed for what he was sent was the rod. These are few of the things he was able to do with the rod: he turned water to blood, he made water to come out from the rock, and he made food available for his family e.t.c.
On this principle, I will be teaching you on the topic, "what you have is what you need".
For you to make it in life, you don’t to have everything, all you need is one thing and I am telling you categorically today that, that thing you need is with you and in you. The only problem is that you have not yet discovered it.
Now, listen to this: Every fruit bearing tree carries the seed to produce another seed to bear fruit – let me explain this: A mango tree produces a mango fruit, that fruit produced carries the seed to produce another mango tree and the tree will produce fruit. What I mean is this, every man, woman, boy or girl created by God is created with a talent/gift that he or she can use to become successful in life.
There are some of you who know how to do some things, but because you lack self-motivation, you just leave it to die. I have come to let you know that you can make it in life with the talent that God has given you from heaven.
As you have learnt in the first lecture about Attitude, there are so many things you have to do yourself and they come from your mind.
The school you are attending may not be able to tell you what you do, but you should know it yourself that this is what I can do and this is what I want to do.
The major thing you need to do now is to set a goal for yourself and try your possible best to pursue and to achieve it.
You may ask that:
What is a Goal? – A goal is what you want to achieve in life. It could be short-term, mid-term or long-term goal. Like now, a secondary or high school student will be looking for how to pass his exam and be promoted, that is a goal, a person doing his/her youth service will be looking forward to passing out, getting a job and getting married, these are goals.
So, it is your goal that you will be looking at and be telling yourself that you can achieve it.
Let me talk about one principle that will help you, it is called:
Self-Talk (repeat after me) – This is the principle of motivating yourself by saying positive things to yourself, you start it in your mind and you say it out of your mouth – you say it continuously, so that the whole of your system will get used to it.
For instance, using words like: “I can make it”, “I will not fail” e.t.c will stir up your soul to want to continue to move forward in life.
The more you are saying it, the more you will be motivating yourself and whatever any other person is saying will not matter to you, you will see yourself achieving what you are created to achieve.
For instance, this program holding today is as a result these two principles I have taught you.
On a final note, you have learnt that: Attitude is the most important thing you need to achieve success, we have also seen that it is not just attitude, but a positive attitude, we also learnt about self-motivation, which will help in achieving our goals and targets in life.
Say this with me: “No matter what may come my way, I will achieve my goals”

Lecture 1: Self-Empowerment through Attitude
In the year 1997, after my elder brother finished his Youth Service, he gave his khaki shirt to me, and then I made up my mind that I will one day put on the uniform.
Since then, despite all odds that have come my way, I did and am still doing all the necessary things that enhanced and will continue to enhance my thirst for knowledge and success.
So, I have come to share with you and to teach you about what helped me to go through all the odds and to stand out today, this will also let you know that, there is no man that can not make it in life.
The major thing needed by Any Man who wants to succeed in life is: ATTITUDE.
So, What is Attitude? – This is the way that you think and feel about somebody or something (talking about different situations you find yourself in life); it is also the way that you behave towards somebody or something that shows how you think and feel, so, your feeling and thought determines your attitude.
Listen to this: “If you have a negative attitude, your eyes will never be opened to see opportunities” – I discovered this statement on the 23rd of March this year and I will like to break it down to you for more understanding.
Man is a tripartite being, which means he is made up of three parts which are: Spirit, Soul and Body. I will be speaking particularly about the soul because that is the seat of the mind, where we think, have emotional feelings and the seat of understanding.
In defining attitude, I made mention of your thinking and we now see that we undergo the process of thinking in the mind, and the mind can see, hear and also talk, because your soul is your spiritual representative, for instance, when you see yourself in a dream, it is your soul that you are seeing.
The Book of all ages says that, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he” – it is talking about your attitude.
Let me tell you this, attitude can be divided into two parts, positive and negative – and it is not possible for you to exhibit the two at the same time, it is either you are positive or negative.
Many people are controlled by external factors, which usually make them to exhibit negative attitude, like I told you about myself, I passed through different negative situations, even from my family members, but I just kept on, building a positive attitude, which I am teaching you about today.
Listen to this powerful statement – The Attitude of a Champion is always positive, you are to have it in you – every successful person in life always have positive attitude in them, it is the power that helps champions to scale through bad times in their lives.

We need to know the factors that can affect attitude either positively or negatively, they are the 3 E’s of Attitude:
- Environment – Home, School, Work, Media, Religion
- Experience – Our behaviour changes according to our experience with various people
- Education – Education refers to both formal and informal, which ought to teach us not only how to make living, but also how to live.

STEPS TO ATTITUDE CHANGE
- Change Focus, Look for the Positive – You need to focus on the positive in your life, start looking for what is right in a person or situation, instead of looking for what is wrong. Note: Dig deep to look for the positive. A negative person always criticizes.
- Make a habit of doing it Now! – If you want to build a positive attitude, get into the habit of living in the present and doing it NOW! – Don’t procrastinate.
- Develop an Attitude of Gratitude – Always count your blessings, not your troubles. Learn to give thanks both to God and man.
- Get into a Continuous Education Program – Intellectual education (going to school) influences the head and Values-based education influences the heart. Education that does not train the heart can be dangerous. An educated person is someone who chooses wisely and courageously under any circumstances.
- Build a Positive Self-Esteem – Self-Esteem is the way we feel about ourselves. When we feel good within, our performance goes up and our relationships improve at home, at school and work.
- Stay Away from Negative Influences – Peer pressure not only affects children and teenagers, it is also prevalent in adults. Joining a secret cult will not and can not build your Self-esteem, it will increase your fear. The people you associate with affect the level you will reach in life.
- Learn to Like the things that Need to be Done – Start by doing what is NECESSARY, then what is POSSIBLE and suddenly, you are doing the IMPOSSIBLE.
- Start your day with Something Positive – Read or Listen to Something positive first thing in the morning. You need to make conscious effort and be committed to make positive thoughts and behaviour part of your life. Practice having positive thoughts and behaviour daily until they become habit.
- Learn to Smile – One of the most important things in living a successful life is smiling at and with people.
- Be connected to God – There is no man in this world that came into it by himself, we are all created by God, so, you must know God for you to exhibit a positive attitude.
- Get necessary Information – Information is know-l-edge gathered, “What you Know gives you an Edge above the rest”, get all the necessary information that relate to what you are doing or want to do, through books, internet, and friends. “If You are not Informed, You will be Deformed”.
You may be asking yourself that why do I need to go through these steps to build a positive attitude, I will highlight the benefits of having a positive attitude now:

BENEFITS OF POSITIVE ATTITUDE
- Makes for a pleasing personality
- It is energizing
- It increases your enjoyment of life
- It helps you inspire others around you
- Helps you become a contributing member of society and an asset to your country

CONSEQUENCES OF A NEGATIVE ATTITUDE:
- Bitterness – unhappiness
- Resentment – anger
- A purposeless life – living a life without meaning
- Ill health
- High stress levels

You must know that people with a positive frame of mind think about possibilities, growth, expansion and success. They expect happiness, health, love and good relationships. They think in terms of “I can”, “I am able” and “I will succeed”.

Within this little time, we have been able to see that it is very important for us to have a Positive Attitude because it is the bedrock/foundation for a successful living, it helps in achieving goals, achieving of success faster and more easily, more happiness, more energy, greater inner power and the ability to inspire and motivate yourself and others.
Listen to this two contradicting statements: Negative attitude says: ‘You can not achieve Success’, but Positive attitude says: ‘You can achieve Success.’
